Improved Rainfall Data in the Philippines through Concurrent Use of GPM IMERG and Ground-Based Measurements

Archie Veloria (from the PhilSA Earth Sciences Space Mission Studies Division and the UP Diliman Institute of Environmental Sciences), PhilSA Deputy Director General Dr. Gay Jane Perez, Dr. Giovanni Tapang (from the UP Diliman National Institute of Physics), and Dr. Josefino Comiso (from the UP Diliman Institute of Environmental Sciences and Meteorology and the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center) studied the concurrent use of GPM IMERG and ground-based measurements in order to get better rainfall data for the Philippines. The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) algorithm combines information from the GPM satellite constellation to estimate precipitation over the majority of the Earth’s surface.
