PhilSA’s logo is partly inspired by a cognitive phenomenon known as the “Overview Effect”, a term coined by space philosopher and writer Frank White. It pertains to the shift in awareness reported by some astronauts during spaceflight upon viewing Earth from outer space. This experience of being confronted by the image of Earth’s fragility and smallness amidst the expansive outer space produces, according to the astronauts, a profound understanding of the big picture.

This element references the Pale Blue Dot, a photograph of Earth taken by Voyager 1 space probe from about 6 billion kilometers away. It represents the desire as well as the need to get to know the world from the outside vantage point.

The gradual lightening of the blue shade represents the movement from dark to light, from ignorance to knowing.

The 2 lighter shades of blue form a shape that resembles the trail left behind by rockets. This shape represents the characteristic of being a trailblazer: one who paves a new path into the unknown.

The sun and the 3 stars that resemble an arrow pointing upward represent our country’s aspiration to be a space-capable and space-faring nation, and of how this aspiration can benefit the country’s upward progress.
