On the Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Effectiveness of Wood for Space Applications

This article investigates the use of wood (Magnolia obovata) as an effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material for space applications. A geometrical model was designed in High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software tool that could perform three dimensional full-wave electromagnetic structure analysis based on Finite Element Method (FEM). The present work demonstrates the shielding effectiveness (SE) of wood in a 1U CubeSat structure. The shielding mechanisms and effectiveness of wood will be evaluated across relevant frequencies.
