The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC), Keio University, and University of the Philippines Department of Geodetic Engineering (UP-DGE), held the ALOS-2 Ideathon Workshop on 17-18 February 2025 at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.
The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2), also known as “DAICHI-2”, is a next-generation satellite developed by JAXA, following the original ALOS “Daichi” mission. It carries an advanced L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar called PALSAR-2, which can capture images both day and night, regardless of weather conditions.
The two-day workshop brought together participants from different government agencies, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations to explore practical applications of satellite data for addressing well-defined social and environmental challenges like urban flooding mitigation, deforestation, or disaster response optimization.
This year’s workshop was built upon the success of its predecessor when PhilSA and JAXA/RESTEC conducted a hybrid training on the application of ALOS-2 and Google Earth Engine (GEE) on Forest Cover Change Detection on 26 September 2023. The continuity of these capacity-building initiatives targets environmental issues specific to different countries, helping participants gain technical proficiency in working with satellite data.
