Monitoring Oil Spill Progression and Oil Spill Volume Using Satellite Images

Satellite imagery plays a key role in mapping oil spills. Oil slicks appear dark on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to low backscatter, enabling effective oil spill delineation. Optical satellite images complement SAR by leveraging spectral characteristics to isolate the oil extents. These are then processed using GIS to calculate the oil spill extent area and produce maps. However, estimating oil volume remains challenging. This study proposes a physics-based method to estimate oil thickness by analyzing reflectance spectra. Using Sentinel-2 multispectral data, the method estimated an average oil thickness of 0.560 ± 0.164 microns, calculating the volume of spilled oil.
